A. T. HAGOOD SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs has established the A. T. Hagood Memorial Scholarship Fund. The purpose of this fund is to assist members and members’ spouses and/or children with funding to further their formal education. Formal education is being defined here as an active pursuit of an Associate Degree and/or a Bachelor’s Degree.

The other requirements which must be met in order to be eligible for consideration of a monetary scholarship award from this fund are:

An application completed and submitted to the Executive Committee of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs that indicates basic personal information.

A letter of justification, describing the need for assistance funding to further an eligible person’s formal education and proof of enrollment for period requesting scholarship funding at an institution of higher learning.

Maintenance and certification of a minimum "C" in all courses during the year of scholarship request.

The Executive Committee of the South Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs will review all scholarship requests and shall determine each year’s recipients of same scholarship.  Applications will be accepted until April 1st of the year it is to be awarded.

Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 normally but may be reduced and/or increased as decided by the current Executive Committee of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.



 

 

RICHARD S. CAMPBELL AWARD

EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC FIRE SAFETY EDUCATION

 

 

RICHARD S CAMPBELL AWARD APPLICATION LINK

 

Purpose: To recognize the Fire Service commitment and dedication to Public Education in Fire and Life Safety for the Citizens of South Carolina.

 

Categories: There are Five (5) Categories for the Award of Prizes:

  • All Volunteer Fire Departments with a Population of 15,000 or Less

  • All Volunteer Fire Departments with a Population of 15,001 or More

  • Combination Departments With a Population of 15,000 or Less

  • Combination Departments With a Population of 15,001 or More

  • All Career Departments

  •  

    Awards: The Winner of each category will receive a public education prop with a value of

  • $250.00 and will receive a plaque to display in the fire station. A Certificate of Honorable Mention will be issued to each submitting department.

  • Judging: An independent panel of professional educators will judge applications.

     

    Deadline: Completed applications with supporting documentation will be considered when received before the close of business on May 15th of the year in question. Announcement of the Winners are made at the Annual South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs Conference during June of each year.

    APPLICATION CRITERIA

     

    The following information shall be included with your application:

  • Identify the category you are submitting your application for.

  • Provide a description of your community’s fire risk environment (area of coverage, population, major fire problems, rural, suburban or rural.

  • Describe how your Department’s fire problems have been identified.

  • Describe your Department’s approach to bringing programs on Fire & Life Safety to your community.

  • Describe outside assistance with promoting your programs (media, businesses, etc.)

  • Describe any success stories (documented life saves, reduction in fire problems related to your programs, etc.)

  • Provide a list of materials used for your programs.

  • Describe your methods for obtaining financial assistance and or community support for your Fire & Life Safety programs.

  • Include any information that you feel the Judges would want to see to help in the judging of your applications (photos, videos, news articles, copies of public education materials used, etc.)

  • Applications will be judged on the following:

  • a. Innovation

    b. Creativity

    c. Evaluation of Programs

    d. Planning

    e. Implementation

    f. Community Support

    h. Media Involvement

    I. Program Strategy

    Applications and supporting documents shall be placed in a binder with the Fire Department’s Name clearly displayed on the outside cover.

    THE FRITZ TURNER AWARD

    Since 1981, the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs has presented the "Fritz Turner Award" to the top fire chief in the state. Fritz Turner was the first South Carolina State Fire Marshal and dedicated himself to serving the citizens of South Carolina as well as the South Carolina Fire Service.

    The information enclosed gives you the opportunity to nominate your fire chief or fire marshal for this honor. Please take a moment to read this information. After reading it, send your letter of nomination to:

    This year the "Fritz Turner Award" will be presented at the next Annual Conference of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs which will be held during October of this year. Information regarding this Conference can be found at www.scfirechiefs.com .

     

    GUIDELINES

  • Any active member of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs may receive the Award.

  • Any active member of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs who has excelled in their dedication and work to develop public safety, harmony, fellowship, leadership and team spirit among the fire service shall meet the criteria for submission for the award.

  • Who may submit a nomination?

  • Any active member of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.

  • The Mayor, City Administrator or Manager, or any member of City Council, Chairman of a Public Service District Commission, Administrator/Manager of a Public Service District, or Commissioners of a Public Service District.

  • The Chairman of a County Council, Administrator, Manager/Supervisor of a County Council government, or any member of County Council, provided that such person submitting the nomination is a member currently serving a term of office, or currently employed by the Council or Commissions and said person may be considered the employer of the nominee.

  • All nominations must be received by the Executive Director of the SCSAFC by May 1st of each year. The Executive Director shall forward nominations and resumes to the appointed Awards Committee for review.  The Awards Committee will review the nominations within thirty (30) days following the May 1st date to decide who will receive the award.

    The Award will be a plaque and it will be standard in size and design for each year and cost between $75.00 and $100.00 and, shall be presented at the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chief’s Annual Conference in June.  The President of the Association or his designee will present the award on behalf of the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.

    The Awards Committee shall be a standing committee and will be appointed each and every year by the incoming President. The Awards Committee shall be not less than a three (3) person committee selected to represent a cross section of the state.
